This is the second in my multi part series, the History of Rhodesia. I thought I would begin with an overview of the pre-colonial history of Zimbabwe, to set the stage for what will probably be quite a Eurocentric study. Rhodesia was a white construct, and the war that decided its future was a race war. There were many preconceptions that underwrote the formation of Rhodesia, and one of them was that the indigenous people of the colony lacked the capability to create a monument on a scale of Great Zimbabwe. Great Zimbabwe was an African creation, and it stands as testimony to the grandeur and sophistication of the African kingdoms that preceded the colonial territory of Rhodesia. Here we touch on some of this, to create a backdrop, before we plunge into the main subject.
