Welcome to Part III of the History of Rhodesia. This part deals with with the arrival in South Africa of Cecil John Rhodes, and his emergence as one of the principal financial and political personalities on the British imperial stage. It also covers the first phase of frontier diplomacy between British and indigenous powers for control of the Mashonaland territory.
This series covers one of the main dramas of British imperial adventure in southern Africa, and a such I will be dealing with it in some detail. In the previous two episodes, we touched on a more personal perspective, and then a brief overview of the precolonial history of the territory, but here we launch into the central theme of British colonial expansion in Africa.
